Architectural Design IV

1. Analyse the environmental qualities and contextual needs of a site and apply ideas of environmental sustainability.

2. Design and create architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural context and existing built context (harness environmental qualities of the site to inform design) which impact on users’ experiences.

3. Combine the environmental needs, the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), and the users’ experiences within simple building design in the open landscape/suburban context.

4. Establish an appropriate level of understanding of materiality and detailing as means to capture experiential qualities of the design.

5. Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas based on clustered spatial typology.

Project 1

Disabilities Experience Pavilion

Project 1 is a group project (3 students per group). This project deals with the understanding of material poetics in relation to user experience. It is to showcase architectural design informed by material use, environmental sustainability awareness in relation to user needs and the activities involved. It is also to inculcate understanding of basic building construction; from how structural design is a construct of architectural spatial design, to the tactile quality of materials and how they are put together to achieve spatial and formal quality.

For Project 1, students will undertake small design task. The duration of the task is kept to a

minimum and is to train students to synthesize simple and quick design solutions as a result of a study on precedents. The task is a general term to refer to simple structure such as pavilion, folly, playscape, relief, or an architectural installation. For this semester, a Disabilities Experience Pavilion will be the subject of exploration for Project 1. The exploration of themes centred around the notion of addressing universal accessibility as well as the spatial experience of physically disabled users in this project will relate to the programmatic requirements in Project 2.

Submission Requirements

1. ONE A1 sized, landscape poster containing:

• Investigation into the spatial needs of the chosen group of users

• Intention collages / sketches illustrating the design process

• Plan / section / elevation (minimum of one each), at 1:50 scale

• One detail section at 1:25 scale

• Axonometric assembly drawing (refer to Fig. 3) at an appropriate scale

• Diagrams / sketches indicating how the pavilion is used.

• Perspective images of the pavilion in use, with a sense of scale and materiality.

Students can utilize both digital and manual methods for the execution of the above.

2. Physical 1:50 scale explorative models (minimum of 3) testing out the ideas in three

dimensions.

3. The presentation of the above material will take place in the studio on Monday 12

September 2022.

4. PDF submission of the presentation material will also be required on the day of presentation.

Project 2A

Site Analysis & Response establishes an understanding of the context for Project 2. Using the

provided site data and information, as well as further information gained from site visit, students will

identify the intangible qualities together with the physical inventory that shape the character of the

site. In assigned tutorial groups students will identify the intangible qualities together with the

physical inventory that shape the character of the site. As a conclusion of the Site Analysis, students

will work with their tutorial group to reorganize the demarcated site area – the Wellness Zone -

through the design of a Wellness Masterplan, which will serve as the base for their Project 2: Wellness

Center PLUS.

Submission Requirement

SUBMISSION / DELIVERABLES

1. The presentation of Site Analysis for each tutorial group should be maximum of FOUR (4) A0

Boards landscape OR EIGHT (8) A1 Boards portrait. Presentation boards are to include:

• A precise analysis of the site covering all aspects of data collected by each respective

team as per the topic outlined in item 2 under ‘Task’.

• A group Wellness Masterplan with proposals for the categories as outlined in item 5

under ‘Task’ in the previous page.

2. The above should be illustrated through drawings, diagrams, and other methods of

illustrations such as collages, montages etc are also encouraged.

3. Manual drawings and sketches are much encouraged and recommended.

4. Physical study models are recommended (to be discussed within tutorial groups)

5. The focus of the presentation is on the process of analysis and how findings serve to

influence design direction, NOT on perfect or polished graphics.

6. PDF submission of the presentation material is required on the day of presentation. Google

Drive Link will be provided.

Project 2B

Furthering the thematic exploration of “engaging environment and community”, Project 2 calls for the design of a Wellness Center PLUS within the Kepong Botanical Gardens, bordering the suburban neighbourhood of Taman Ehsan. Students are required to provide full design proposals incorporating findings from precedent studies and site analysis. Students will generate narratives that respond to the environment and community as user group within the given context and explore environmental poetics of building enclosure’s design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilizing various complex typologies of spatial organisations and a variety of passive strategies for sustainable design. The design

should contribute to and merge harmoniously with environment and site and provide the best of spatial experiences in fostering a sense of community. Students are required to demonstrate applications of knowledge gained from Architecture and Environment module from prior semesters and integrate research from Asian Architecture module.

List of Deliverable Items

Conceptual Illustrations

1. Diagrams clearly illustrating translation of conceptual ideas into spatial design

2. Precedent Studies Diagrams

3. Conceptual Site Plan and Site Section and Building Section at preliminary level.

4. Study models

Main Orthographic Drawings

5. Site Plan – to show proposed building roof plan together with adjacent buildings and landscape

6. Plans, Sections, Elevation (indicating strong relationship with the physical environment/site)

7. A key drawing for this semester is an “integrated sectional perspective” which combines

construction detailing with spatial atmosphere, contextual/environmental response, and

communal use (refer to Fig 4). This drawing should be related to the sectional detail perspective

produced for Project 2 in the Advanced Architectural Construction module.

3-Dimensional Representations

8. 4 key perspectives – interior & exterior - demonstrating poetics generated by relationship

between environment and architectural space (To demonstrate actual use of space)

9. An exploded axonometric drawing demonstrating the relationship between building components

in various types of cluster arrangements.Architectural Design IV (ARC60508): August 2022
