building construction and materials

This module intends to inform the students on the basic building construction and materials used in the construction of small to medium scale buildings. It focuses on developing an understanding of the principle of the building elements which include the substructure and superstructure and common construction materials such as concrete, masonry, timber, metal, and glass. For each material, this module will describe the manufacturing process, properties, and typical uses of these materials in construction. Students will undergo a series of continuous assessments such as assignments, and tutorial activities to ascertain the objective and outcome of the module is achieved.

Project 1:
Famous Architect's Building - Material Application

Individually, student need to choose an architect from the given list. From the chosen architect, the student needs to identify five (5) architectural building materials and two (2) structural building materials based on the case study. Students are also to study on the ideas and concept behind the selection of the material and of the building. Additionally, students are also to describe the installation one (1) of the materials applied on the selected building. Building’s selection can be from any time or age.

The compilation of the findings needs to be nicely composed in two (2) A3 papers that include the following information:

1. A brief background of the architect.
2. Historical background of the chosen building.
3. Clear images and information of the five (5) architectural building materials and two (2) structural building materials respectively.
4. Sketches of one (1) material’s installation on the selected building.
5. Relevant images of the chosen building (floor layout, elevations, three-dimensional perspective etc.).
6. Overall conclusion on the choice and application of materials on the chosen building.
7. References

Project 2:
Construction Drawing

This group assignment will emphasize on producing a construction drawing set that consist of detailing of building elements on superstructure which include floor, wall, door, window, staircase, and roof. The drawing will be based on the followings :

A. Architecture Studio 2 - second project (for Architecture students)
This is an integration assignment. In a group of five (5) to six (6) students need to produce a construction drawing of their studio work. Only choose one (1) project from studio’s second project. They are allowed to choose on the construction materials to be used.

All drawings must be in scale as given. The final product of this assignment needs to meet the following requirements:
1. Ground floor plan (1:50 – A), (1:75 - B)
2. First floor plan (1:50 – A), (1:75 – B)
3. Section (2 nos.) (1:50 – A), (1:75 – B)
4. Elevation (2 nos.) (1:50 – A), (1:75 – B)
5. Floor to roof section (1:25 – A & B)
6. Door details which include plan view, section, and elevation (1:10 – A & B) 7. Window details which include plan view, section, and elevation (1:10 – A & B)
8. Staircase details which include plan view, section, and elevation (1:10 – A & B)
9. Exploded axonometric (only for A) (1:50)
10. Individual reflective writing

Outcome

Reflection

I learnt about the construction methods and basic components of construction. I also learnt about the materials in the process of  completing project 1. I learnt about many materials and their applications in the construction process. Lastly, we were to draw a set of construction drawings and I had a basic understanding of how construction drawing are produced including the door, staircase, window and roof details.
