DESIGN COMMUNICATION

The module introduces fundamental skills for the appropriate communication of architectural design. It engages different means of visualization and expression of space and spatial ideas through architectural drawings to prepare students with the skills required in design projects. These skills are taught through a series of freehand and constructed drawings held both outdoors and in the studio.

The teaching and learning approach for the module will be lecture and tutorial-based, with students engaging with blended learning experiences during the lecture and tutorial sessions. The outline mode of delivery is a blended learning approach, the proportion of face-to-face and use of Online learning (TIMES).

PROJECT 1: MOVIE POSTER

MOVIE POSTER

PROJECT TASK
AND OVERVIEW

To design a movie poster with the techniques learnt from the previous tutorials. A human figure is required in the poster.

REFLECTION

This project combined all of the techniques which were practiced in the tutorial exercises.

PROJECT 2A : MODEL MAKING

PROJECT TASK
AND OVERVIEW

To execute a 3D modelling projection of the Farnsworth House to a scaled model of 1:100 by the referring to the orthographic drawings given.

TWO POINT PERSPECTIVE DRAWING

REFLECTION

Overall, I am satisfied with the precision and the neatness of the drawing but I think the line weight of the drawing could use some practice. It was a new experience for me to produce perspective drawings and axonometric drawings from the floor plan.

PROJECT 3 :
FINISHING AND PRESENTATION

PROJECT TASK
AND OVERVIEW

To colour the drawings in project 2 and compose them onto a A1 board for presentation.

REFLECTION

Overall, I am satisfied with the final result but I hope to improve in my ability in using alcoholic markers as a media to color. The colour saturation of the final work is a bit too high.

SELF REFLECTION

The module overall was really well arranged and it helped me to gain more understanding in the techniques to draw such as the wats to hatch, the medias that can be used to colour the drawing. The lectures were straight forward and clear but I think it may need a bit of elaboration instead of just showing how to complete the tutorials and projects as it may a bit dull that way. For me the most useful was the lecture of how to draw the perspective drawings, I find drawing the two-point perspective drawing the most interesting and challenging. To be able to create a perspective drawing from a floor plan is a intriguing experience for me.

PERPECTIVES ON CLASSES

This is not the first year of experiencing online learning for me, as I did it in my final year of high school. It did affect my learning attitude and motives, just like how it did last year, and without sufficient discipline soon I will find myself being too lazy to complete all the projects. Fortunately I get to finish all the projects in time with a rather satisfactory result.

The most inevitable setbacks of online learning is the lack of interaction of the content. This makes the module rather uninteresting. Although without physical classes the module was rather dull for me, I have found some advantages in online learning, which is project submission. Instead of submitting the project physically on time, it provides more time flexibility to the students and decreases their stress.

Putting all the  related info on facebook gives me convenient access to the newest updates from the tutor, so I think it is a really efficient way to inform something important.

Times is a great platform to submit work too. It is clear to the student that the info on Times are more important thus the priority given to the project submission on Times is emphasized.

PERSPECTIVES ON TUTORS

As Ms Ilia is my project tutor and I didn't really get to experience any lectures from the other tutors, I will focus on my perspectives on Ms Ilia.

The project briefs were straight forward and clear, and she is really patient when answering questions. Overall, I think the module design is efficient and it does increase various abilities to produce quality designs.
